Fulham belong in Europe, says Schwarzer

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer says the Cottagers are looking to make their mark in Europe after a strong domestic campaign last season.

The Australia international has been a key presence in Fulham s blossoming in the English Premier League after joining at the end of their disastrous 2007/08 campaign.

Since then, the Cottagers have gone on to record two top-10 finishes in the past three years, as well as taking Atletico Madrid to extra time in the final of the 2009/10 Europa League.

Fulham are on the long road back to Europe, having been granted a berth in the first qualifying round of the 2011/12 Europa League through UEFA s Fair Play rankings.

The club has already cleared the first hurdle Faroese club NSI Runavik with a 3-0 aggregate, and locked in…

Adam dispels Alonso comparison

Charlie Adam has dismissed suggestions that he has been brought to Liverpool to replace former midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard moved to Real Madrid in 2009 shortly after the Reds finished second in the league, but his departure from Anfield triggered a dramatic collapse in form as replacement Alberto Aquilani struggled with injuries and the side failed to qualify for the Champions League.

While Alonso continues to impress in Madrid, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has brought in midfielders Adam and Jordan Henderson to compete with the players already at the club.

However, Adam insists he is not worried about trying to replace the Spanish World Cup winner and is focused on just cementing a spot in Dalglish’s side.

Xabi Alonso was a top player at…

De Bruyne: I have nothing to prove to Chelsea

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne is adamant he has nothing to prove to Chelsea as he prepares to take on his former team on Saturday.

The Belgium international joined Chelsea from Genk in January 2012, but left Stamford Bridge in January 2014 after failing to secure regular first-team action.

He earned himself a big-money move to City in August after impressing at Wolfsburg and, having starred for Manuel Pellegrini s side so far this season, does not feel any extra pressure on his return to west London.

I don t feel I have to prove anything to anyone because there s nothing really to say. It s not a case of I played a lot and played badly, I just didn t play, De Bruyne told the City website.

It is it what it is and I m just going there to try and he…

Nantes confirm Der Zakarian departure

Ligue 1 club Nantes have confirmed coach Michel Der Zakarian will step down at the end of the season.

Following Sunday s 1-1 draw with Marseille, Der Zakarian announced his intention to leave at the end of his contract, citing unsatisfactory relations with president Waldemar Kita and the board of directors.

Nantes released a statement on Monday to acknowledge the forthcoming end of the 53-year-old s four-season reign.

The statement read: After the match in Marseille that saw his team to a 1-1 draw against Marseille, Michel Der Zakarian, out of contract, announced his decision not to lead FC Nantes at the end of the season.

The club takes note of the decision of the coach and thanks him for his work over the past four seasons. We wish him the best for h…

I´m almost back to my best after injury nightmare – Cazorla

Villarreal midfielder Santi Cazorla believes he is almost back to his very best after his career was nearly ended by injury.

The 34-year-old left Arsenal in May last year, having not played for the Gunners since October 2016 after a series of Achilles surgeries – one of which preceded an infection that put him at risk of having his foot amputated.

He joined Villarreal for a third time following his departure from the Emirates Stadium and has made 35 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring six goals.

Cazorla has described his return to first-team action as a difficult journey but now feels like he has been able to put his injury nightmare firmly behind him.

I worked really hard to recover my best form, he told Omnisport. Recovering my …

Rooney: I´m still good enough for the Premier League

DC United striker Wayne Rooney believes he is still good enough to play in the Premier League.

England and Manchester United s all-time leading goalscorer swapped Everton for MLS by signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with DC in June.

The forward struggled for form after returning to his boyhood club Everton in 2017 in a deal that sent Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford.

However, the 33-year-old helped lead DC from the bottom of the Eastern Conference and into the play-offs, scoring 12 goals and supplying six assists in 21 appearances.

If I m being honest, I know quality wise, I can still play in the Premier League, Rooney told CNN Sport.

I know that. I ve always been a confident person, and so I have high expectations of myself.

I ve come …

Chilwell ´dream´ shattered as injured Chelsea star suffers England World Cup KO

Ben Chilwell said his dream was in tatters after the Chelsea left-back was knocked out of contention for England s World Cup trip.

The former Leicester City defender suffered a hamstring injury in the closing seconds of Chelsea s Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

He underwent scans on Friday, and the results showed a significant problem, Chelsea announced.

It comes after Chilwell recovered from a cruciate knee ligament injury to reclaim his place in the Blues team and show he could have been an asset for England.

While his club said only that 25-year-old Chilwell was expected to miss the tournament in Qatar, the player himself added the finality by conceding there was no chance he would make Gareth Southgate s squad.

He wro…

Everton eye Chelsea defender

Chelsea have done some really good business already this summer, with two important signings. They signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax in February and more recently, they managed to get Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. That was a somewhat surprising deal and now many are saying that even Kai Havertz could be the player Chelsea want. But whilst the Blues are already stocked up front, that is not the case in defence.

Frank Lampard should start thinking about improving at centre-back, as that is one of their main issues, but they could also lose another centre-back this summer. That is Kurt Zouma, who is the subject of interest from Everton. Le10Sport claim that the Frenchman could be making a move to Goodison Park, after he already played there in 2018-19 on loan. They now want to get him …

PSG to trigger Osimhen release clause?

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly identified Napoli s Victor Osimhen as their primary target to replace the departing Kylian Mbappe this summer, and according to , they re likely not to be put off by the €130 million release clause in the striker s contract. If all else fails, they might well be willing to meet it to get they want to lead their attacking line from next season.

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, a notoriously difficult man to negotiate with, has already admitted this season is likely to be Osimhen s last at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, though it s believed he s still holding out for the full release clause, unwilling to give up a single cent.

Premier League clubs Manchester United and Chelsea have also been credited with interest in the 25-…

Lincoln chief executive says football clubs ‘have to be protected’ by owners

Football clubs are too important to the communities they serve not to be respected and protected by their owners, Lincoln chief executive Liam Scully has said.

The Imps have come fifth in the latest Fair Game Index measuring how sustainably the 92 clubs in the top four divisions last season were run, and got the highest score of all clubs for their equality standards.

City are members of Fair Game, which had been calling for an independent regulator for English football long before the Government white paper on football governance set out details of its remit earlier this year.

Scully said it was not his or Lincoln’s place to tell other clubs how they should run themselves, but insisted it was vital an “overall framework” for good governance was in place to…
