Jack Grealish: FA Cup semi-final the perfect game to ‘put right’ European exit

Jack Grealish believes Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea gives Manchester City the perfect opportunity to put their Champions League agony behind them.

City’s hopes of successfully defending their European crown – and winning a second successive treble – were shattered on Wednesday as they were beaten by Real Madrid on penalties.

The defeat was particularly galling given that City had dominated the second leg of the quarter-final tie at the Etihad Stadium, but they have little time to dwell on their misfortune.

Attention has immediately shifted to Wembley and a key clash in City’s bid to retain one of the other two trophies they won in glorious fashion last season.

Midfielder Grealish said: “We’ve not been used to losing, especial…

Arshavin keen for semi-final repeat

Andrey Arshavin is desperate to repeat Russia s Euro 2008 performance at the coming tournament, and is targeting a semi-final appearance.

The Russians were beaten 3-0 by eventual winners Spain in the semis four years ago, and Arshavin is keen to reach the final four of the competition once more.

Getting to the semi-finals would be a success because then we won t have lowered the bar from last time; and also because to get there we will have to beat one of the best teams; Germany, Netherlands or Portugal, Arshavin told Sport Express.

Spain were simply stronger than us (in 2008). Not only stronger than us, but than all the other teams in the tournament. We held them for 70 minutes but when you just do that; chase the ball against a machine like that, you just ru…

Infantino: I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel gay

FIFA president Gianni Infantino launched an impassioned defence of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, insisting he feels solidarity with many of the groups seemingly marginalised by taking the event to the Middle East.

The decision to host world football s showpiece event in Qatar a country with a chequered past on human rights issues, its treatment of migrant workers and the illegality of homosexuality has drawn widespread criticism, but in an extraordinary riposte, Infantino was unrepentant.

He said: Today I have very strong feelings. Today, I feel Qatari. Today, I feel Arab. Today, I feel African. Today, I feel gay. Today, I feel disabled. Today, I feel a migrant worker.

I feel all this because what I have been seeing and what I have been told, since I don’t read, o…

Barca eyeing Coutinho – Ronaldinho

Barcelona great Ronaldinho said the LaLiga champions have a lot of admiration for Philippe Coutinho as they eye a move for the Liverpool attacker.

Coutinho has been linked with Barca following his exploits for Liverpool after moving to the Premier League from Italian outfit Inter in 2013.

The 24-year-old sidelined with an ankle injury since November is under contract until 2020 but two-time World Player of the Year Ronaldinho claims Barca are monitoring the Brazil international.

I hope when he [Coutinho] returns from injury that he will continue the form he has been showing all season with Liverpool, Ronaldinho said in quotes attributed to The Sun.

He has been one of the stand out players in Europe this season – and I know there is a lot of admiration…

Rodgers looks forward to ´iconic´ Old Firm clash

Brendan Rodgers is looking forward to his first experience of the iconic Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers on Saturday.

The clash between the sides will be the first Old Firm league game since 2012, with Rangers working their way through the divisions after a demotion to Scotland s bottom tier following insolvency.

Rodgers said he is expecting the match to be fiercely contested in front of 60,000 passionate fans at Celtic Park.

It s another game but it s a special game, Rodgers told the media on Thursday.  Always keenly fought, tough games but we re looking forward to it.

Time has shown that United´s problems remain – Mourinho

Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United s end-of-season collapse has demonstrated the problems he faced during his time as manager have not been addressed by letting him go.

The former Inter and Chelsea boss faced widespread criticism for the brand of football his United team played, despite the fact he won the EFL Cup, the Europa League and led them to a second-place finish in the Premier League.

Mourinho was sacked by United in December following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool with United sixth in the table and 19 points off the top.

Under Mourinho s replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils went on a 12-game unbeaten run in the league, but their form nosedived towards the end of the season as they failed to win any of their last five matches and finished …

Denmark 2-0 Scotland: Three Things We Learned

The World Cup qualifiers are in full flow in the current international break with nations from across the continent all making sustained pushes to try and reach next year s showpiece event in Qatar. Two of those countries, Denmark and Scotland, battled it out in Copenhagen last night in what proved to be a fairly convincing 2-0 win for the Danes.

Both sides are coming off the back of appearances in Euro 2020 but based on this performance, it would ve been hard to put them on the same level as one another.

Danish dominance

Denmark were on fire in this game and in all honesty, it felt a bit like they were taking their foot off of the gas after they jumped into a 2-0 lead. We knew they were going to enjoy a surge of momentum after their semi-final appearance at the Euros …

Sane deal financially ´very difficult´, accepts Bayern president

A deal to bring Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich from Manchester City is looking increasingly difficult from a financial perspective, according to the Bundesliga champions president Uli Hoeness.

Bayern are embarking on a rebuild over the coming months as they look set to move on several ageing players, with Rafinha, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery all departing.

As such, Bayern are being heavily linked with a number of younger wingers and Sane has emerged as a primary target, with the club doing little to hide their desire to sign him.

The German joined City from Schalke in 2016 and, after a promising first season, he exploded in 2017-18, scoring 10 Premier League goals and setting up another 15 as he was named the Professional Footballers Association s Young Player of…
