Borussia Dortmund Have Made Excellent Choices Signing Hazard, Brandt

Few teams – if any – have moved quicker than Borussia Dortmund during the current transfer window in Europe. And BVB have taken a competitive advantage by getting their business done early in the offseason.

Just look at how quickly they have found attacking reinforcements. Knowing Christian Pulisic would leave the side once the 2018-19 season ended, Dortmund knew they had to sign someone that could fill the gap left by the American. And while Pulisic wasn’t a dominant force as he was in past years, Dortmund would’ve still missed him. With that in mind, they signed not one, but TWO attacking players – both during Wednesday, no less.

First, Dortmund announced the arrival of Thorgan Hazard from Borussia Monchengladbach on a five-year deal. And then, they announced the signing of Bayer Leverkusen star Julian Brandt. Both players came on relatively ‘cheap’ deals as well. Dortmund snapped Hazard for £22.95M and added Brandt for £22.5M more. Considering today’s market rates, those were bargains.

Plus, Dortmund already secured the services of former Hoffenheim left-back Nico Schulz on a £22.5M deal. And they have been linked with a move for Barcelona’s Malcom, as the Brazilian is keen to depart from La Liga after one year of signing with Los Blaugranas. Can you imagine the kind of firepower Dortmund would have in that scenario?

Hazard registered 10 goals and 12 assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Monchengladbach this past term. And Brandt had seven goals with 14 assists in 33 league outings for Leverkusen. Out of nowhere, Dortmund have added two creative-minded, goal-scoring threats that would boost the side considerably. And now that we mentioned Malcom – he’s only 22 and one year removed from a 12-goal, eight-assist season playing for Girondins Bordeaux.

It remains to be seen if Dortmund will make more moves during the summer, but all signs point towards them not stopping here. And while they might not be able to compete with Bayern Munich, it’s undeniable that they’re a team on the rise.

The scariest thought is that they’ll only get better in the next few seasons.
